Season 7, Round 1 - Macau (CHN)
The much hyped Season 7 opening round at Macau was ready to offer and provide some specatcular on-track action! Entries hitting record numbers, allowing us to have a 24 kart grid for the season opener!
Qualifying was spilt into two groups for the first time in OKC, and it saw rookie Corrie Hiatt taking overall pole position over Interepid Driver Program driver, Jesse Doorgeest. The two only being split by 0.02 seconds! Reigning champion, Aaron Heathman follows in third, with Bryce Stevens and Alessandro Ceronetti rounding out the top 5. This set us up for a very exciting set of Qualifying Heats! Each driver was now to take part in 2 heats out of 3, which would decide where they would stand for the Pre-Final starting grid!
Heat 1 (AvB), went the way of Ceronetti, as he took advantage of a collison between Doorgeest and Hiatt which dropped them both back outside the top 8. One of the new faces on the grid took second place, acting on some major battles within the top 5, Andreas Jurgenson. The man from Iceland had the better over teammates Rowan Gill and Justin Adakonis who round out the top 5 after a tough battle.
Heat 2 (BvC), was taken by Ceronetti again who had made it two out of two heat wins! After overtaking Doorgeest on the first lap, the Brit managed to pull a gap on the rest, leading him to a comfortable win. Doorgeest dropped back to 3rd in the early stages, as Heathman took 2nd place in the FPR kart. Soon enough, Heathman was unfortunately involved in an incident between himself, Frank Mossman and Doorgeest, which led to Mossman's retirement and Heathman to drop outside the top 10. In the end, the number 1 kart took a respectable 6th Place, as rivals Doorgeest and, Season 1 Champion, Joel Oswick rounded out the top 3 for that qualifying heat.
Heat 3 (AvC), was an exciting battle for the win, and Hiatt took a consoling win after the disaster that had hit him in the earlier heat. Stevens picked up the pieces to finish in P2, with Heathman rounding out the podium for the heat. Reigning rookie champion, Daniel Fellows finished a good P4 considering he had a heat he would rather forget earlier. Rowan Gill rounds up the top 5 for the heat.
In the B Final, Kyle Strycharz was in Pole Position with Aiden Neate along side him. Both had a poor start dropping down the order, with Mossman taking full advantage of it and taking a very comfortable gap, from 12th on the grid. Joe Innes followed behind to take second place and Shan Laubscher rounding out who would be promoted to the Pre-Final. Carmine Caruso was ever so close to the promotion positions in P4, and Strycharz dropped back to P5.
After the qualifying heats, the top 5 Pre-Final grids were: Ceronetti, Gill, Adakonis, Heathman and Stevens. The 10 minute race saw Heathman making up ground to P2 to chase after Ceronetti whom already had a comfortable gap over Heathman. In the meantime, it was a three way fight for P3 which saw Gill, Stevens and Adakonis, who kept on swapping places until they all found their place. Earlier pole sitter, Hiatt had got involved in a number of incidents and only managed P11, whilist Daniel Fellows charged to P6 after starting in 12th.
The first final of the season saw an FPR front row lockout with Ceronetti and Heathman. The protagonists behind them were still not to count out though as they had shown bags of pace and could potentially challenge for the lead. Unfortunately it did not go that way as Heathman and Ceronetti pulled away from the rest. Hiatt slowly made his way up the field to come 4th, along with a few other big movers, Doorgeest and Oswick who had come from the deep ends of the grid to finish within the top 6. A brilliant race for Mossman too who started last to finish 5th. Unfortunately he suffered a 2 spot penalty and was demoted back, but showed good pace. Hiatt came out on top in the rookies race, with Ceronetti, Heathman and Stevens in the top 3.
After the opener, its given the tables a bit of shape. Ceronetti leads with a clean sweep, and 45 points in his belt over Heathman's 41 in 2nd place. Following close behind with 37 points is Bryce Stevens. Current leading rookie Rowan Gill in 4th with a total of 35 points. Rounding up the top 5 is Adakonis with 25 points.
After the epic battle at Macau we need at least 2 weeks off till the next round at Essay! The huge grid provided some really exciting racing, and we are looking forwards to see the battle continue on the 25th April!
